As a 6-year-old budding pianist I thought, seriously,
that the "Ped." must be a cocker spaniel.  (Our best
friends had one.)  If I had to read this as a pedalling
direction, well, fair enough.  But I recall asking my
dad, "Why did they write a cocker spaniel to make
me put the pedal down?"
