A syllable can be followed by punctuation, optionally. Then it can be
extended for multiple notes, with single underscores.
hy -- _ _ _ phen (with hy extended over four notes, with hyphens as needed)
mel __ _ _ _ is -- ma (with mel extended over four notes, with
underscores as needed)
spa _ _ _ ces (with spa extended over four notes, with space as needed)
