Hi Chris,
The closest thing I can come up with is that it's a typical marking found in
twelve-tone music (such as Schoenberg) [see attached image].
Is the piece you're working with atonal in nature? Perhaps it's a marking
that relates to the row...if not, I'm not sure what else it could be.
