Workaround:
Add a second, hidden note before \break

\version "2.17.20"

\new Staff \transpose c c' {
  \override Beam.breakable = ##t
  \override Beam.positions = #beam::align-with-broken-parts

  c2.. c'8*1/2[ \once \hideNotes c' \break
  a8 f8] c2.

  c2.. c''8*1/2[ \once \hideNotes c'' \break
  a'8 f'8] c'2.
