what about using /GridLine/ and /GridPoint/ - this doesn't touch the spanBar
or Bar and gives  quite a few of possibilities to play with, 

e.g.
\override Score.GridPoint.Y-extent = #'(2.50 . -2.5)
to keep the grid line out of the staff

search the NR for /GridLine/ or /GridPoint/
