I've seen very tight lyrics also in old scores.  (I'm not entirely sure 
whether hand-engraved or not, but at least I think so.)  I think this 
makes some sense for parts where vertical space between systems is more 
important than everything else, in particular full scores oder even 
piano reductions with, say, the original language in a smaller, lighter, 
italic typeface.  Anyway, you should be able to get a similar 
space-efficient and more readable result with a tight baseline-skip setting.
