For the letter you want, I guess it's in fact the "LATIN LETTER OU",
with Unicode code point U+0222 or U+0223 (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ou_%28letter%29).
As stated there, you could use "8" or \markup \italic "8" instead. Note
that you have to write "8" instead of just 8 in the lyrics, since it is
parsed as a duration of a (missing) syllable without the quotes - thus
the error.
