Wow, you know I was so close in my original. I had originally voiceA =  
\new Voice = "voicea" \relative { music } voiceAswitches = \context  
Voice = "voicea" { switches }. And then in my \score block, \new Staff  
<<\voiceA \voiceAswitches>>
