As soon as your score has more than a single stave, then you automatically
get a line at the left edge. However, if you only have a single stave, then it's automatically turned off. I have tried a number of different tricks, but this seems
to be a hard-coded behaviour in the program that i couldn't workaround.

Therefore I pass the question to the developers mailing list:

- For SystemStartBrace and SystemStartBracket, the property
collapse-height is used to determine if the brace/bracket is printed
for single stave scores. However in System_start_delimiter::print
there's special treatment of SystemStartBar objects so that the
bar line is never printed for single stave scores.
Is this hard coded limitation only for historical reasons or is there
 any good reason?

- Is it possible to workaround this in any way? I have tried to play around
with different properties of both SpanBar and Bar objects but haven't
 managed.

Thanks, that helped; but I overlooked the fact that this would also leave me with no bar line on the left. I tried adding \bar "|" at line breaks, but no luck. any ideas?
