guitar techniques -- muting

hi folks.

i'm fairly new to lilypond and am trying to write out some guitar music. i
haven't been able to find any information on representing palm muting
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_mute) with lilypond -- is there a way? i
shouldn't think it would be hard to implement if not, since it's represented
in notation and tablature almost the same way as piano pedal or 8va lines.

also, the music i'm writing out has a lot of left-hand muted notes in it
(which are represented with cross noteheads, but still with a pitch in
notation, just a string in tablature). at the moment i'm doing the override
command before and after each muted note or passage, and this is a lot of
override commands. i'd really like to be able to just add something to the
end of the note to say it should have a cross notehead in the same way that
i add \6 if i want the note on the 6th string for example. is this possible?

thanks
