Thanks again, Kieren. Can you (or anyone else out there) tell me what the bracketed numbers are? They look suspiciously like bit numbers.
Look in the docs, <http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.9/Documentation/user/ lilypond-internals/grob_002dinterface.html#grob_002dinterface>. They are a pair of numbers (given in staff spaces) representing the horizontal size (X-extent) of this object -- that is, (2 . 2) means the object is considered 4 staff spaces wide.
