In my experience attaching \stopTrillSpan to a spacer
note produces less than optimal results, for example:

a\startTrillSpan a a\stopTrillSpan
a\startTrillSpan a s\stopTrillSpan
a\startTrillSpan a 
\once \override Rest #'transparent = ##t
r\stopTrillSpan
