Thanks. I installed flex flex-2.5.31. Same compiler output. My gcc version is:

# gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.2 20020903 (Red Hat Linux 8.0 3.2-7)
Copyright (C) 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

Should I upgrade gcc?

Apologies for inundating the list yesterday. My first post. The list mailer
kept telling me my message was being held so I resent from another address.

Cheers,

Peter
