You can do lyrics on the form:
\new Lyrics \lyrics { \skip 1*20 bla4 bla8 }

(you can view \addlyrics as a command that just fiddles with the durations of 
the syllables)

This part of lilypond is however a weakness, improvements could be done (i'm 
actually thinking about proposing a new system or an improvement to the 
current one).
