The first example in NR 1.8.1, ‘Text marks’ uses \mark "Allegro".
Surely we shouldn’t advocate such usage in the manual (in this case one should really use \tempo). As a more illustrative example, I’d suggest:

\relative {
  \mark "Verse"
  c'2 g'
  \bar "||"
  \mark "Chorus"
  g2 c,
  \bar "|."
}
