What do you intend to show with this example? In such constrained spacing,  
there wouldn't have been any possibility to do better. However, with

  paper-width = 9 \cm
  paper-height = 13 \cm
}

pat = { f f f f }

  \pat \pat

it would be better to break after the second bar and have an additional  
line. That's what this issue should do, isn't it?
