Issue 4502 shows that the unconditional change of \whiteout's default  
behavior is not unilaterally acceptable.  Even when the implementation is  
improved, the results will sometimes leave holes.  It does not seem like it  
is suitable for default behavior, at least not in its current  
implementation.

I strongly suggest to
a) revert the naming change
b) implement the changed behavior via a markup property like whiteout-style

Option b) implies that it is possible to change the default behavior for  
the whole document in the layout definition, but override at individual use  
cases.

whiteout-style could likely be box, rounded-box, outline and possibly other  
definitions.  A new command for each variant does not seem warranted.
