Comment #6 on issue 4242 by address@hidden: make \shiftOff useful
https://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=4242

Issue 3324 shows where the warning could be useful, to explain to users that LilyPond does not assign a default order of voices. I suggest a better message, and more-friendly behavior, in issue 4255.

The warning can be useful when, and appears when, no voicing command has yet been given. We do not need a command for getting the warning. Either \oneVoice or \undo\shiftOn bring us back to the undefined horizontal-shift state.

horizontal-shift: undefined 0 ±1 ±2
  used for voice: \oneVoice \voiceOne \voiceThree
                               \voiceTwo \voiceFour
 current command: \shiftOff -- \shiftOn \shiftOnn

   patch command: -- \shiftOff \shiftOn \shiftOnn

\shiftOff as (incorrectly) described by the manual is not a reversion to default, but an instruction on how to set a voice. \shiftOff should not be \revert for the same reason that neither \autoBeamOff nor \cadenzaOff is an \unset.

So old patch back to "patch-review"
