... as opposed to using staff-positions like semi-graphical music editors  
use.

The docs explained this in Notation, but not in Learning.

The section on how to enter pitches in Learning has the  
title "Accidentals", which made me expect that the '-es' in 'bes' created  
the accidental, and thus
  \key f\major f4 b8. b16 b2
having no accidentals, needs no '-es' (and should sound like a wedding  
march)
