A classical engraver would have used the same tool for phrasing slurs and slurs, sure, but since that tool is used for cutting arbitrary curves, that does not mean that slurs and phrasing slurs need to look the same.

For example, slurs tend to track noteheads (if necessary with several inflections) while phrasing slurs tend to span a phrase more loosely, staying mostly concave.

At any rate, might be worth some input/thought from Hanwen. At least the 2005 change would look like being somewhat intentional.

Any input from Gould/Ross/etc?
