I asked about this on -devel.  The part causing the error is the bit like:

{ c4 -\parenthesize -\f }

DAK replied: "Possibly because \f produces both a spanner and an item.  The  
item gets
parenthesized while the spanner garners a complaint."

Again, this has been the behaviour since 2.12.  I think the error is a bug  
in its own right.
