It's not just the repeat-volta test that would call for a redesign.  This  
is not particular to this issue, however: the respective regtests were a  
logical embarrassment before this change already.

I agree that it seems appropriate to start a new tracker issue with the  
intent of making the repeat regtests exhibit use cases making sense.  It  
does not necessarily mean that all of those should or will work fine with  
the state established by this patch, but without actual examples to go by,  
it is hard to figure out what behavior one wants to see in borderline cases.

Best, but not predictably available, are of course problem reports from  
real typesetting examples.

At any rate, pushing this to staging as
