The patch that was reviewed seems to improve things in general, and the  
things that possibly got worse would call for adjustments that are easier  
to do after this patch:

1) The dixit dominus fits on one fewer system, compressing a line with long  
notes; we could tell LilyPond less willing to compress lines by increasing  
the minimum distances of the basic 'springs' between notes in  
Spacing_spanner::note_spacing()

2) Rehearsal marks are part of a 'NonMusicalPaperColumn' just before the  
note with which they are simultaneous.  That column gets space after it  
determined by Spacing_spanner::standard_breakable_column_spacing().  Maybe  
you want Staff_spacing routines to deduct that from the space to the note  
before the rehearsal mark?

I'll push the patch reviewed so far in commits
