We can try addressing the efficiency complaint at
 <http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=2527#c61>
but leave the recursive_add_support() in place.
(Note that the intervening issue 3365 makes remove_duplicates() more  
expensive.)

This is a bit more risky than a simple revert, if recursive_add_support()  
actually does add large number of duplicates, as Mike feared when he first  
introduced the code. Mike, any memory of how you thought the duplicates  
might become significant?

Here the 5 is supported by the 4, and recursive_add_support() also makes  
the 5 also be supported by the 1.
