Ok, regarding the timing I actually bungled it (and need to repeat the 20  
minutes, to boot).  The version of 2.17.14 that takes so long is one where  
I selectively reverted define-grobs.scm to see where this would get me.   
Then I aborted the run because it apparently locked up.

And later I used the binary nevertheless for a different experiment.  Doh.   
Now it's obvious that this half-baked revert does not bode well for  
performance and/or caching.  But it's part of figuring out where the  
difference comes from.  I hope I don't have to do the equivalent of a  
bisection with performance like that, though.
