I'm happy to prepare a patch for either suggestions of yours (with a mild  
preference for that of David), while considering both as papering over the  
real problem.  my suggestion is definitely more complex as it involves the  
parser, and I would like to hear your opinions about it - maybe it's worth  
opening a new issue.
