It's just like \drums, \figures, \chords, a shorthand creating both context  
and entering a mode.  Admittedly, I don't see it in the index of the  
notation manual, but it's probably left in there as a convenience.  Why  
would your example not work as expected?  It does not even contain \lyrics,  
and

\lyrics \with {
    \override VerticalAxisGroup #'staff-affinity = #DOWN
 } { Oh crux! }

should work just fine.
