here is an attempt - feel free to tell if it's not the preferred way (or if  
I broke sth...)!

there is now a new option -b or --backup-numbered (boolean); when true, the  
new behavior is initialized, otherwise the old behavior persists (I'm now  
only overriding an existing backup file without previously removing it)
