Issue 2146 added the check for these characters, but it only printed a  
warning during ./configure (intertwined with all the usual output) and  
didn't raise an error for missing characters. It also used AS_DIRNAME  
without checking if the argument was empty. With the patch for the current  
issue, ./configure will fail instead. Your point is good, though, and I  
will have a llok if we can detect one good set of fonts among multiple  
installed versions of the same font. Can you please report what is the  
output from
fc-list "Century Schoolbook L:foundry=urw:fontformat=Type 1" file
on your system with the "bad" fonts installed?
