An example is illuminating, I believe:

\new Staff { \compressFullBarRests R1*2 R1*3 R1*4 }
\new TabStaff { \compressFullBarRests  \tabFullNotation R1*2 R1*3 R1*4 }
\new Staff \with { \override StaffSymbol.staff-space = #1.5 }
{ \compressFullBarRests R1*2 R1*3 R1*4 }
