Currently, PDF is created by first creating PostScript, then using ps2pdf  
(which is Ghostscript with its pdfwrite backend) on the results.

We have had our fair share of Ghostscript problems in this process, and  
some of them are still around, some of them related to rasterization.  It  
also means that inclusion of external PDF files or use of PDF features is  
not possible where ps2pdf does not support them.

Writing PDF directly is not substantially harder than writing PostScript,  
and it would significantly speed up our conversion processes.  It would  
also lead to more consistent results in print and preview.
