Please see review (yes, reviewing after push is hardly efficient).  This  
patch gets so many pitches wrong that I think it should be reverted and  
redone.

(actually, by myself after disentangling it from a borked merge on staging)  
and could probably still be "disappeared" without reverting, but we should  
probably first discuss properly and then revert instead.
