I am not sure whether this is 'bad' behavior.

The parenthesized number shows that the note
still sounds while the other notes in the chord
are added, so this is helpful indeed, IMHO.

To be honest: I would not have assumed that
LilyPond is *that* clever ;-)

But I am not a professional typesetter, so it
would be quite helpful to have some standard tablature
guidelines at hand. Gould et al. do not give much
information in that respect.
