Here are two other images, this time for xdvi, generated with

  mf '\mode:=proof; input parmesan20'
  gftodvi parmesan20.2602gf

for both the old and the new code.  It shows that the bounding box is  
severely off after applying the patch.

I haven't had time yet to look more closely at the patch, but I second  
David's feelings that a much less invasive change should do the trick.
