a request to combine staves when they are identical for the duration of one  
system.

So in the example below, if the "inner chair" and "outer chair" violins  
were written separately into individual staves, the requested option would  
combine these two staves into one for the first and third systems, where  
the parts are identical.  Notice that the parts are identical in the third  
measure of the second system, but the staves continue separately until the  
line break. (To generate the example I adjusted the input after seeing the  
line-breaking.)
