I am promoting this to "Critical" to give it proper attention.  It should  
not stop 2.15.43 and likely not the first alpha of 2.16, but without more  
of a clue about the circumstances and platforms and extent of this problem,  
I would not want to finalize 2.16.  It produces inconsistent, possibly  
wrong output (depending on platform fonts) on unknown systems under unknown  
circumstances.  For a stable release, that's hardly acceptable.
