Probably the main problem here was keeping the original author of the patch  
out of the loop.  He would have been the one having a well-formed opinion  
about what changes are intentional and what not and for what reason, so one  
probably should have waited for a comment from him (if necessary, asking  
for it) instead of second-guessing the change as "probably intentional, so  
I'll just wait for someone better-informed to venture an opinion".
