Regarding comment 18: the given example

  \relative c' { a( \appoggiatura g8 b) a \appoggiatura g8 b) }

properly displays a warning for the second slur now:

junk.ly:1:58: warning: cannot end slur
\relative c' { a( \appoggiatura g8 b) a \appoggiatura g8 b
                                                          ) }

However, the first "correct" appogiatura sucks royally.  We'll probably  
need to implement some sort of slur/slur avoidance.  That's definitely a  
different issue, though.
