After the fix for issue 2566, the default is to beam
 \relative c'' {\time 3/4 a4. a8 a a }
in the traditional way, with three eighth-notes beamed together.

To split the first eighth-note from the beam in this situation, use
 \set Timing.beamHalfMeasure = ##f
