The option we were missing from 2.14 was to automatically beam 6-eighths but not 3 (the Ted Ross rule)
Not only Ted Ross; also Elaine Gould. And Gould appears to be much more thorough and careful about beaming than any of the previous engraving references.
However, I completely agree that the human engraver is (or should be) free to choose their style. But if it requires consistent manual beaming, the choice is not really there.
