http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=2445 @Themu...I dispensed entirely with bar lines and got the engraver to work with paper columns. So now you can number the first measure of a score (!) and there doesn't appear to be any issue with vertical spacing.
I'll need to provide for the situation where a measure begins with a grace note.
