It's gonna take me a while to figure this out...Dot_column::add_head  
entangles X and Y callbacks, which makes it very difficult to sort pure  
stuff out.  Looking back, 1c24c56886cd85f04283ac61e8a0deea172035ed was a  
stupid idea, as it creates a pure_set_X function, which by definition  
defeats the purpose of pure.  If I ever figure this out, my new patch will  
undo this part of it (the pure getter methods, on the other hand, work just  
fine).
