If you use Ubuntu maybe you could try using the pre-compiled packages instead of compiling your own? Compiling the compiler needs a bit less than 3Gb virtual memory. I guess you got beaten by the OOM killer :-)

You can find detailed instructions at: http://apt.liberty-eiffel.org — The packages are built for Debian but they should work on derivatives, please tell us if they don't.
