I saw this myself but it wasn't recently. Perhaps the nonfree JS code
is a CAPTCHA you only get if you come in via Tor.
Thankfully there isn't such a CAPTCHA at present, at least one common
enough that I've encountered it in four visits.

It describes itself as a "web-app client". Is that another term for
the extensions we're discussing? If not, how is it different?
Not exactly- it means it's a client (for Reddit) that runs as a single
HTML page with some static scripts and stylesheets. That makes
converting it into extensions as easy as adding a manifest and
compressing everything.
However, I don't think it would be worth actually doing that except as a
proof of concept. While old.reddit.com is still working there is little
benefit to maintaining such an extension, and the fact that the old
interface is popular but not the default suggests it will continue to
work without JavaScript for the foreseeable future. As long as we remain
sure the basis for an extension is available, that can be made into an
active project whenever it becomes necessary.
