it's there, but the getpwd() system call did not return that information.
Is your system configured to look in /etc/passwd for user information (on
Linux libnsswitch.conf), or do you possibly use NIS or LDAP?

Are there other files besides /etc/passwd that contain user information?
(e.g. some BSD's have /etc/master.passwd)
