What fails? What's the error message? What's the phenomenon? What does
the symlink look like?
I wonder why it doesn't work, because here you have modified a section
which seems to work correctly without the path:
- $(LN_S) mtools $(DESTDIR)$(bindir)/$$j ; \
+ $(LN_S) mtools$(EXE) $(DESTDIR)$(bindir)/$$j ; \
