I am pleased to announce the release of GNU swbis 0.499

GNU swbis is a package management project that implements
the ISO/POSIX software administration standard with extensions.
The extensions include package embedded GPG signatures, md5 and
sha1 digests for the archive and individual files, and support
for nil control directories so that a swbis POSIX package looks
like and indeed "is a" plain tarball.

The scope of swbis is similar to other package managers such as
`rpm'.  Its scope  includes install, create, query, verify
functionality but unlike `rpm' does not deal with the software
build phase.

Although many features and several of the POSIX utilities do not
yet exist, existing functionality for source package creation and
verification is tested and stable.  The `swinstall' utility is
tested against thousands of RPMs using its built-in RPM translation
capability.

Features of swbis:

* `swinstall' and `swcopy' are network transparent and *do not* have
to be installed on the remote host.  'Swbis' works real hard at not
becoming a new requirement on existing GNU hosts.  Just send the
package to any host that has a POSIX or GNU toolset and also allows
you to login via ssh.

* `swpackage' mimics the GNU tar output bit-for-bit which allows its
use as a directory signing tool and preserves GNU tar as the archive
writing utility.  The `swign' utility embodies this idea.

* The embedded GPG signature design supports multiple signatures and
offers full package life cycle protection, including as installed
software via the installed software catalog.

New in version 0.499:

* Added support for using gpg-agent to obtain the passphrase.
* Added support for verifying directories exported from CVS.
* Added support for creating signed packages from an autoconfiscated
  Makefile using a Automake target symmetric with existing 'dist-*'
  targets.
* Added sha1 digests for the individual package files.
