UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC

SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE SUPPORT MANAGER

ALC 2, £19,482 - £25,213

REF 462/00AR

FURTHER PARTICULARS

The Post

The University of Glasgow is seeking to appoint a Systems and Software
Support Manager possibly specializing in computer-based Music
Applications, in
areas such as Composition, Performance and Music Information. This post
involves taking responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the
Music Department's computing facilities, liaising with the Senior
Technical Programmer in Music Technology (whose primary responsibility
is for the Department's professional audio and audio-visual equipment),
giving support to a growing community of student, academic and
professional users and proposing lines of development to realize the
academic and IT objectives of the Faculty of Arts, the Department of
Music and the Centre for Music Technology.

The successful applicant will have experience in system and network
management (UNIX, Windows NT, Novell Netware). Of advantage would be a
variety of
compositional and other musical applications of computer technology, as
well as an
ability to operate and demonstrate music software with a familiarity
with
good studio practice. Experience in any of C, Objective C, Lisp, MIDI,
csound, cmusic, cmix, clm, common music or carl would be an advantage,
as would some familiarity with the operation of general-purpose
applications such as text and graphic processors, spreadsheets and
databases. He/she will have an organized and disciplined approach aimed
at supporting the Department's academic and professional
responsibilities and managing its computational resources.

Glasgow provides an excellent cultural base for the Department's
interests and activities, as it is one of the principal centres for
music in the UK. With respect to media, Glasgow is the base for BBC
Scotland and Scottish Television, and is home to the Royal Scottish
National Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Opera
and Scottish Ballet, and many other bodies dedicated to the performance
and dissemination of music. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra performs
regularly in Glasgow, and there are many excellent choirs, chamber
ensembles, and soloists located in the city. The professional community
associated with these institutions forms a very important resource base
for the
Department's teaching and public output.
