The problem was solved by removing the file and typing it in again because it
is small. i made sure I did all the work on UNIX and not via eclipse on
windows or anything. Seems to work now -
Of course this does not really answer the question about what happened to it.
If anyone has any good advice :-) or info I'd still appreciate it.

Also - how do i tell if it's binary. cvs status shows -kb so it is right?
however all the other scripts in that directory are too and they are not new.

can you or do you have to set the end of line characters or anything in CVS
files? We have a weird error. file is a shell script ...everything looks
normal in vi w/ set list etc. if we run unix2dos file seems to work.
when we put it back into cvs doesn't seem to work after we check it out.
it says
+ $'\r'
: command not foundheduledjobs.sh: line 4:
hidden character seems to be at end of line.
weird... thx
