Your script will fail on any first modified revision on a branch:
What is the predecessor of revision 1.1.2.1? Depends on how it got
there - initial add or result of a merge. There are probably more
cases I haven't thought of. Anyway, attached is a much simplified
version, which does exactly the same as yours. So it's no real
improvement.
